FACULTY OF MEDICINE-A SHORT
HISTORY |
The Annamalai University is a unitary residential University imparting instruction in Post-Graduate and Professional Programmes in several disciplines, besides providing research programmes upto the Ph.D., D.Litt./D.Sc. levels. It was founded by the munificence of the farsighted, noble-hearted philanthropist and patron of letters, the Hon’ble Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad. He started several colleges, and ultimately, the University in 1929. Since its inception, the Annamalai University has progressively tried to realise the aims of its noble Founder Pro-Chancellor. After him, his illustrious son, Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, was the
Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984, and he sedulously nurtured the growth and development of the University. The present Pro-Chancellor Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, a philanthropist and patron of sports, is the distinguished son of Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar. The University has had the unique good fortune of having a succession of eminent Vice-Chancellors to guide its destinies. During the last 82 years, it has grown rapidly and has consolidated its position as a unitary and residential University with
forty-nine Departments of Study and over 3240 members on its teaching staff. Annamalainagar is a busy and self contained University town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The University campus, including the colleges, hostels, and playgrounds, sprawls over an area of about one thousand acres.
Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, the present Pro-Chancellor has, by his dynamism and farsighted vision as well as philanthropic outlook, endeavoured to translate the dreams of his father into reality. As a result, the Rajah Muthiah Medical College was established on 5th August, 1985, on the Eighty-First Birthday of his revered father and a great visionary whose name it bears. This is the second phase of the development of the Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Sciences, since the Rajah Muthiah Dental College had been started in the first phase in 1980.
In the initial stages, the institute was well nursed by Dr. S.V. Chittibabu, the then Vice-Chancellor. It was then taken care of successive Vice-Chancellors who took interest in the growth of the Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Sciences.
Dr. M. Ramanathan who is the present Vice-Chancellor is a internationally recognized Surgeon and he evinces great interest in the growth and development of all the Faculties of the University especially the Medical Faculty of which he served as Dean, before he assuming charge as Vice-Chancellor. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons had recently conferred on him their Fellowship (i.e) FRCS, in recognition of his contribution to General Surgery. He successfully conducted the Golden Jubilee of the Faculty of Agriculture during April 2008.
The Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital serve the needs of the surrounding villages by providing medical treatment with skilled doctors and well equipped hospital. Apart from ensuring curative and rehabilitative services through the teaching hospital of the college, community services on the preventive and promotive sides are being meaningfully organised, keeping in view the health needs of the rural as well as the urban sectors of the community. The Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Sciences is designed to play a dynamic role efficiently and effectively implementing the “Health for all by 2000 A.D.” programme as envisaged by the Government.
Dr. N. Chidambaram, an eminent Cardiologist who served RMMCH as its Medical Superintendent with distinction and dedication is presently the Principal and Head of the Department of Medical Education. He is also the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
The Principal and Head of the Department of Medical Education is ably assisted by renowned teachers and the Faculty consists of many eminent medical experts. It is noteworthy that Dr. N. Chidambaram was recently awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons – FRCP (Glasgow).
Dr. S. Viswanathan, a well known Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and Director of Centre for Yoga Studies who rendered excellent service as Deputy Medical Superintendent, RMMCH is the Medical Superintendent of the Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital, which is functioning in the spacious new complex at Natarajapuram. Recently in recognition of his services to Obstetrics & Gynaecology, he was awarded the FRCS by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow.
The Rajah Muthiah Medical College takes pride in mentioning that three of the stalwarts in the field - Dr. M. Ramanathan, the present Vice-Chancellor,
Dr. N. Chidambaram, the present Dean and Dr. S. Viswanathan, the present Medical Superintendent have been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow.
The Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital are developing rapidly under the benevolent guidance and able leadership of our Founder–Pro-Chancellor,
Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy and the Vice-Chancellor. With the acquisition of a
C.T. Scan and colour Doppler in April 1998 and the MRI (1.5 Tesla) in 2006, the Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital has joined a select band of sophisticated hospitals in the country.
The Academic tempo in the Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital is maintained at a high level by the activities of the scientific body – ‘Academy of Medical Sciences’. Under the auspices of the Academy, regular monthly meetings are held wherein research papers and hospital cases are presented and discussed. Symposia are held annually on various Medical topics. Eminent scientists are invited by the Academy to give guest lectures on topics of current importance. The University has been hosting several National Medical Conferences. The teachers in the Faculty are encouraged to present and many have presented papers/participated in several National Seminars/Conferences/ Symposia.
The imposing structures of Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Sciences with a built-in area of 6,970 square metre were built at a cost of several crores of rupees and has the distinction of having been declared open by His Excellency Rashtrapathi Shri R.Venkataraman, the then President of India, on 28.4.1988. This houses both the Medical and the Dental Colleges. In the first phase a 450 bed hospital with facilities for advanced surgical operations and sophisticated equipments and laboratory appliances for providing effective in-patient services, was declared open by His Excellency Dr. P.C. Alexander, the then Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor of the University.
In the Second Phase, a spacious OPD complex with a built in area of more than 5,575 square metre was declared open by Dr. Lalitha Kameswaran, the then Vice-Chancellor of Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
Now the New Hospital Complex with a total strength of 1,250 beds with 6,776.5 square metre space with all basic amenities and specialised good quality services have been commissioned to offer services to various sections of beneficiaries from Cuddalore and adjacent Districts.
During 2009, a specially designed and spacious Accident & Emergency building complex was constructed and declared open by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. M. Ramanathan, on 10.07.2009 and fully functional.
Four new hostel blocks, two each for men and women have also come into being for providing comfortable accommodation to the students. Besides there are separate quarters – one each for men and women CRRIs. A new Post-graduate students hostel with 163 single bath attached rooms, has also been constructed and occupied by the students. The University has also provided staff quarters besides playgrounds and other amenities which make the campus life comfortable and stimulating both for teachers and students. New hostels for I MBBS/BDS students (men) and a separate hostel for B.Sc. Nursing students are also available.
A special feature of Rajah Muthiah Medical College is that it is one of the very few Medical Colleges in India directly run by Universities. As a University Medical College with residential system, there are ample opportunities for healthy interaction and learning from multi-disciplinary facilities available in the campus of the Annamalai University. Situated in sylvan surroundings, the University is in close proximity to the famous pilgrim centre of Chidambaram with Lord Nataraja as its presiding Deity.
Rajah Muthiah Medical College has been granted permanent recognition by the Medical Council of India for 150 annual admissions into the M.B.B.S Programme. It has also been granted permission to run Post Graduate degree programmes in 18 different specialities with effect from the academic year 1997-98, all of which are recognised by Medical Council of India / Govt. of India. |
