International Conference on Natural Products and Biomedical Technology
ICNPBT-2011
January 10 – 12, 2011
ORGANISED BY
DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY & BIOTECHNOLOGY
in collaboration with

CAS in MARINE BIOLOGY

Dear Colleagues,
The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Annamalai University is organising  ‘International Conference on Natural Products and Biomedical Technology (ICNPBT-2011)’ with the help of CAS in Marine Biology, Annamalai University. The theme of the conference is ‘Natural Products and Biomedical Technology’. Recent scientific research has focused on natural products and potential phytochemicals that have possible health benefits beyond traditional nutritional value.  Phytochemicals act as a defense system against oxidative damage and may be helpful in alleviating many chronic diseases and the effects of aging.  A systematic search for useful bioactive phytochemicals from natural products is now considered to be a rational approach in nutraceutical and drug research. Impact of recent biomedical and technological advancements might lead to development of new products.

Biotechnological approaches for functional foods, nutrigenomics and pharmacogenomics will also be a serious concern.  India is on the threshold of becoming a global leader with its rich bio-diversity, marine ecosystems and various raw materials for new drug development. In this context,  this conference will provide a forum for discussing the medicinal properties of phytochemicals and their applications in biomedical technology with reference to  epidemiology, biochemistry, experimental medicine, clinical and interventional cardiology, diabetes and other related diseases. Large number of delegates from India and abroad are expected to attend this meet. We request you to take this opportunity and participate in the conference and visit the temple city of Chidambaram. Your active participation is highly solicited. We will make our best efforts to make your stay in Chidambaram academically fruitful and enjoyable.  Kindly, make a note of dates for the registration, abstract submission and accommodation and we request to circulate this information to your friends and colleagues who may be interested in attending the conference.

Host Department:
Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology

The Department of Biochemistry in Annamalai University, established in the year 1994, Dr. Venugopal P. Menon as head of the department. The Department has made rapid strides in both teaching and research activities in the last 16 years. M.Sc. Biochemistry and M. Sc., Biotechnology (2 year programmes) and  a 5-year Integrated M.Sc., Biotechnology programme are offered by the department.  In addition,  M.Phil., and  Ph.D., programmes are offered. At present, the Department is headed by Dr. K. V. Pugalendi.  The major areas of research include free radicals and antioxidant defence systems, analysis of medicinal utilities of natural products and development of molecular markers and preventive strategies for diabetes, heart disease and cancer, radioprotection, chronopharmacology, chronotherapy and molecular chronobiology. The members of the teaching staff have earned academic distinctions and awards and have received research grants from several national as well as international funding agencies. The Department has signed memoranda of understanding with Johns Hopkins University, USA and National University of Singapore, Singapore. Recently the Department has been recognised by the DST for funding under the FIST programme and by the UGC under the SAP-DRS programme.

Host Department:
Centre of Advanced Studies in Marine Biology
The CAS in Marine Biology, a pioneering marine research institute is actively engaged in teaching, research and extension in various aspects of Marine Biology. Over a period of 50 years necessary expertise and facilities have been acquired by the Centre. The Centre is headed by Dr. T. Balasubramanian who is an outstanding marine scientist and the Member of Syndicate of Annamalai University. The academic activities of the Centre have been well recognized not only by the University Grants Commission but also by other National and International agencies like the Department of Ocean Development, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Department of Science and Industrial Research. The Centre has also established research collaborations with Ehime University (Japan), National University of Singapore (Singapore) and Marine Biological Research Institute, Plymouth (UK). The Centre is currently involved in developing new drugs from marine organisms and eco-friendly aquaculture; other areas of research include Environment Impact Assessment and Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System, Assessment of Biodiversity potential along the east coast and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and conservation of sensitive coastal ecosystems such as estuaries, mangroves, coral reefs and lagoons.
